Residence for artists

Residences for artists have become something essential in many artistic careers. They play an important role in making easier and catalysing the artists’ ability to move around the world.

The artists taking part in the so-called residency programs build bridges between countries and cultures, thus contributing to cultural diversity. Both artistic and cultural exchange and cooperation happening through these programs contributes to increase the understanding between countries and cultures. All of this is especially vital in times of politic and economic crisis, even more so when public opinion and attitudes throughout Europe are showing signs of cultural intolerance.

Our residence provides artists and other professionals some time, pause and silence, space and resources to work ―whether individually or in groups― in areas of their disciplines, thus favouring a deeper reflection or concentration.

The phenomenon of residences for artists

Residences for artists are not a new phenomenon. Nevertheless, in the last few years we have experienced a rapid growth and an increasing importance that has been attributed to the role the residences have been playing in both the artists’ professional careers and creative areas.

On the one hand, a lot of them see residences as an ideal first step to take in order to become professionals once they have obtained their diploma. On the other hand, the most experienced artists take a “break” to enjoy their retreat while they stay in a residence to create their work. But they also do it as a break in the middle of their professional career.

Residences allow artists to do some field work and work in situ in order to compile, investigate and create new perspectives. This kind of integrated investigation contributes to conscience and reinforces the concept of residence for artists as a centre and area for self-knowledge. It also allows to create a clear, mutual responsibility of experimentation, care, dialogues and exchanges.

Main goals of our residence

The residence for artists is a PERMANENTLY OPEN program implemented by Traductores del Viento in order to achieve the following general goals:

• Being a tool at the service of both artists and creation, thus offering some material and space conditions for people to develop creative projects related to Traductores del Viento’s programming and lines of action.
• Making access to artistic and intercultural reflection easier for citizens, either through the work accomplished or through the creative processes they have been living in.
• Meeting cross-cutting and multidisciplinary demands taking place in the centre in creative, cultural and crtitical thinking fields.
• Connecting proximity creative weave with both national and international cultural, similar environments, thus searching for long-lasting, mutual exchanges, relationships and collaborations.
• Being a driving force for the centre itself, in dialogue with creation and in constant yet collaborative fight with the centre’s other action and programming lines, thus maximising the potential for using Traductores del Viento’s space.

What does Traductores del Viento’s Residence for Artists offer?

An OPEN residence program is available for creators in Traductores del Viento in order to make cultural, research or environmental projects execution easier.

The space shelters these creators under a residential regime, providing them with a place to spend the night, as well as to investigate, exchange, create and reflect in silence.

Residents are offered the possibility to share and debate with others, that is, to find some space during their time in the residence to share their knowledge and to debate generating encounters.
